What We Really Learnt from 3 Weeks on Road in the US.

Chris, Kirk, and Georgia have just returned from three jam-packed weeks on the road across the US and Canada.

From the OARA Roundtable and yard tours to the IBIS and URG Conferences, we saw firsthand what’s working and what’s holding recyclers back.

From family-run shops to multi-location giants, we saw firsthand what’s driving the industry forward and busted some big myths along the way.

Myths Busted While on the Road:

Myth #1:  “AI is years away from being useful in our industry.”
BUSTED.

AI is not 'coming', it is already here. Many innovative recycling facilities are already trialling it with multiple tools, including some we do not even think of as AI. AI is just another tool to help auto recyclers work smarter and faster. AI like Ari, our APS AI Sales Agent, is already being rolled out across many recyclers and helping to generate real leads, pick up overflow and after hours calls, and ensure recyclers are not missing sales.

Myth #2: “There is only one right way to run a yard.”
BUSTED.

Every yard has its own rhythm, but the best ones share a few things: strong processes, a willingness to adapt, and a hunger to learn. The yards investing in URG and ARA conferences, Profit Team Consulting, and new systems are leading the way, and it shows.

Myth #3: “Damage grading is not that important.”
BUSTED.

It came up everywhere, on the URG Yard Tour bus, at OARA, IBIS, and the URG conference. Recyclers, collision repairers, and insurers all need to speak the same language. Standardising damage grading will reduce confusion and help everyone close sales faster.

Myth #4: “Social media is just a nice to have.”
BUSTED.

It is a must have. Top yards are using Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube to generate leads, not just likes. Video especially is changing the game, making parts easier to sell, and building trust online.

Myth #5: “Remote staff do not work as hard.”
BUSTED.

We met multiple yards and Chris moderated a thought provoking session with the teams from Chucks Auto Parts Solutions and Bionic Auto Parts, proving the opposite. With the right tracking in place, outcomes matter more than hours. Orders, quotes, and calls all tell the real story. In fact, some yards now offer remote work as a reward for high performers.

Myth #6: “eBay is too hard to get right.”
BUSTED.

Yes, there is a learning curve, but it is worth it. The yards going all in on eBay are getting real results. Those just dabbling are not seeing the same returns. Photos, video, quality listings and titles, and consistency all pay off when you commit to doing it well.

We just want to say a massive thank you to everyone who welcomed us into their yards, joined us at conferences, on the bus, at dinner or at the bar, and made time to connect.

APS is more fired up than ever to help auto recyclers bust myths, save time, and make more money!
