Last month I wrote a piece outlining how it makes sense for insurers in the UK to incentivise collision repairers to use more Reclaimed Original Parts (ROParts) in the repair process.
Since then I have had a number of emails from repairers, insurers and auto recyclers asking for more information. It certainly stirred some interest in the model I have developed over a number of years and the subsequent calls and discussions I’ve had with insurers and repairers have led me to expanding on a previous article I wrote a couple of years ago.

It is about to become significantly more expensive and, in some cases, virtually impossible to repair our vehicles with new parts alone. And the time a vehicle is off the road, is set to increase significantly.
Lifetime Warranty on Recycled Collision Parts – A No Brainer!
It was late 2003.
I had been working on a reused parts strategy for three years and had just agreed to trial it with the largest insurer in Australia, Insurance Australia Group (IAG). We and IAG were presenting the concept to a room full of very sceptical collision repairers in Liverpool, Western Sydney.
The strategy was built on the following 3 simple guiding principles:
Incentivise the repairer to use more recycled parts in the repair process. That is, make sure their margin opportunity is better than that on any other part option.
Build a supply chain that is managed to ensure a quality service and product is delivered every time.
Make it easy for the repairer to communicate and order their products.

In short, yes. We all know that suppliers of spare parts have obligations under the Compulsory Recall Notice to identify and remove Takata Airbag Inflators from the market – but what about other recalled components?
Co-Existence – How Vehicle Manufacturers and Auto Recyclers MUST work together
In 2010 I presented at an auto recyclers conference and the headline was “We are not the competition”.
Basically, I was doing two things:
1. Trying to get the auto recyclers to work closer together and share inventory to satisfy the needs of the consumer better.
2. Make a point that the competitor was the Vehicle Manufacturer (VM) and that the auto recyclers should work closely to create a better competitor to the VM.
